Be prepared!
I just completed a 4-day class to better understand how to sail, operate, and maintain our boat in anticipation of the day when Catalyst becomes ours. We learned about the boat’s engines, power systems, water maker, emergency equipment, waste, fuel and water management procedures, and more. The learnings drove home the innovation of the Balance design as well as the sophistication of its systems.
The sailing sessions were also remarkable. We hoisted 5 different sails in various wind conditions, learning how to raise, trim and reef them as needed. We practiced anchoring, maneuvering with two engines, man overboard drills, and more. With wind speeds at times exceeding 35 knots, it was a true delight to experience the catamaran’s power, stability, and grace. Also noteworthy was the the excitement and comradery of my fellow students (all Balance owners) as well as the expertise and passion of our instructors. We learned best practices and gotchas to avoid specific to our boat design, leaving me better prepared for when we set sail for Grenada later this month.
